The Perfect POKEMON GO Playlist to Help You Catch ‘Em All

Do you want to be the very best? Like no one ever was? Well, you either grew up playing/watching OG Pokémon, or you are the statistically naive progeny of a baby-boomer who erroneously promised you that you were special. Chances are that you are both and that you spent all weekend playing Pokémon Go and caught a Zubat while you were driving to the grocery store to pick up paper towels.

We are right there with you along with millions of others who turned their smartphones into IRL Pokedexes this weekend, trying to cover as much ground as possible in the hopes of snagging some rare Pokémon and reliving the glory of of the late ’90s before the hardships and growing pains of adolescence. Then, our biggest worries were, how am I possibly going to collect all 151 original Pokémon, and will I have to invite the weird kid from school over to my house so we can trade starter and fossil Pokémon?

What helped us get through the slog, of course, was the excellent 8-bit music that was essentially the soundtrack of the bus ride home from school and the moments before your parents made you do your homework. As you travelled from gym to gym in the Kanto region, the music made the experience that much more immersive, suspenseful, and action-packed. And while the music in the new Pokémon Go soundtrack is great, I thought I would augment the augmented reality game with a little playlist of my own, featuring big ’80s and ’90s anthems (Europe’s “The Final Countdown” and “Cold as Ice” by Foreigner) and emotional ballads (“Love Kills” by Shooter Jennings, “The Mountain” by Gunship), the stuff of epic journeys. This way, you’ll feel like the most badass trainer on the app. Because, hey, if you can’t be the very best, you might as well be the fuckin’ coolest.
