THE ORIGINALS Showrunner Teases Major Klaus and Hayley Bonding

Who’s ready for a road trip on The Originals?

After Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin) officially ended her flirtations with Elijah (Daniel Gillies) out of respect for her dead husband, and new vampire Cami (Leah Pipes) ended things with Klaus (Joseph Morgan) more harshly than she actually intended to, the two parents packed up their daughter and hit the road with New Orleans in their rear view mirror. For all you patient “Klayley” fans, tonight’s all-new episode, “Alone With Everybody,” is going to be for you.

“The episode is going to pick up pretty much immediately after where we left them in episode 15,” executive producer Michael Narducci tells Nerdist. “Klaus and Hayley are on the road and we’re going to see where they go and what they’re up to and what is their dynamic as a family on the run.”

They end up joining up with Hayley’s old pack for protection and shelter, but things don’t exactly stay quiet. They actually end up discovering some “unsettling news about the threat against them.”

“This is an interesting story. We thought a lot about what we most wanted to explore with those two characters and it didn’t feel like they needed to solve some problem of the week or collect some tchotchke or fight some evil villain,” Narducci says. “Really what they do is they return to this place, Klaus gets some insight into who Hayley was and what her journey was like before he met her, and over the course of the episode, they realize something is going on in their surroundings.”

That threat will lead the two parents to finally sit down and hash out what kind of parents they want to be for their daughter.

The Originals

“They have a pretty intense philosophical debate about how they want to react to bad things happening in their lives and what they want to do as parents should those bad things start to target their daughter,” Narducci says. “It’s a conversation that’s long overdue. These are two people who have at various points in our series really been at each other’s throats and yet they’re bonded by their daughter who they both love. They have to find a way to work in lock step and this is a step in that direction.”

Back in New Orleans, the rest of the Mikaelsons are going to be reeling from the revelation that their eldest brother Finn (Caspar Zafer) is alive again.

“We’re going to see what effect the return of Finn will have on the remainder of the Mikaelsons who stayed behind in the Quarter,” Narducci says. “You’ve got Kol [Nathaniel Buzolic] on one side and Freya [Riley Voelkel] on the other and Elijah is caught in between as they welcome—or maybe not so welcome—their brother back into the fold. There’s a lot of great family drama to be played.”

At the very end of the last episode, Kol seemed to be unable to control his hunger for blood, despite telling Davina (Danielle Campbell) that he has his vampirism under control this time around. Narducci explains that “there’s a couple things at play” to make Kol’s bloodlust more difficult to control right now.

“The last time we saw Kol on The Originals, he was inside the body of a witch,” Narducci says. “That was where he wanted to be. That was the self-actualization of Kol. He was happiest when he was practicing magic and when he was able to delve into the magical arts that his mother taught him 1,000 years ago. Now he’s back in a vampire body and a vampire has certain urges, and he’s cut off from that ability to practice magic. There’s a little bit of anger and irritation at not being able to do the thing you want to do, a little bit of being struck again by the hunger that comes with being a vampire, and in addition to that, there may be something else that is pushing him in the direction of this intense bloodlust. That’s going to be a big story we tell going forward.”

The Originals

Expect Kol’s hunger issues to affect his relationship with Davina in some pretty major ways.

“It will absolutely drive much more than a wedge between them,” Narducci says. “The key thing here is Davina met this guy she thought she could trust. She was hell bent on bringing him back so that she could have a friend, an ally, a love. She brought him back but he came back with baggage and she’s going to have to decide, do you give up on the people you care about or do you double down and stop at nothing to help them when they need your help? That’s a big part of the journey she’s going to have to go on, and what she’s going to learn from her relationship with this guy who means well but is suffering from a lot of problems and may not be the best person to be interacting with right now.”
