The Original LUTHER (Not That Fox Remake) Will Get More Idris Elba-Filled Episodes in 2015

It’s a wonderful day for people who love things in their original form: the BBC’s fantastic crime thriller, Luther, has been given the green light to do another season — and no, we’re not talking about that recent Fox iteration slated to happen here in the United States. Pshh, please.

This iteration will have its greatest asset: the incomparable Idris Elba, who will reprise his role as DCI John Luther, the antihero-y murder detective whose brilliant and cunning brainbits can’t always save him from the violence with which he is so clearly enamored.

While there’s no word where and when the series would pick up Luther’s story, the end of season three saw him — and these are spoilers folks, so be warned — with his waffling moral relativity eschewed for more adventure fun-times with his serial killer best bud, Alice Morgan, the seriously so good it’s stupid Ruth Wilson. (Sidenote: can we start a campaign to have her made the first female Doctor on Doctor Who because I MEAN REALLY.)

The very well-liked and acclaimed miniseries will return for two 60-minute episodes in late 2015, with filming set to begin in and around its London home in March. And yes/don’t worry: it will air in its full glory on BBC America here in the states.

Of the return, creator Neil Cross explained it thusly: “Ever since we said goodbye to John Luther on Southwark Bridge, there’s hardly been a minute when I didn’t wonder what happened next. So I decided to find out. We’re putting the band back together; Luther is coming back where he belongs. Back to the BBC. Back to London. And back to work.”

What about the prequel-movie & the ALICE Spin-Off? Could someone please tell Mr. Elba, that it doesn’t help your career, when you sign for shitty movies? (No good deed, Pacific Rim etc.) He belongs to the A-List, but those movies won’t get him there…

Neil Cross (the writer and creator) wrote a preuel novel called Luther: The Calling.  It was an excellent book.
