Before the summer is over, we all will indeed get to see the premiere of Garfunkel and Oates on IFC. We’ve been waiting as patiently as we can since IFC gave the greenlight to Garfunkel and Oates last year. The series makes it very first bow on actual television, as opposed to their HBO Go series available online only with an HBO subscription, Thursday, August 7th at 10PM on IFC. That’s months away, but you can get a look at the opening to Garfunkel and Oates right now.
Hopefully, you’d be acquainted with Riki Lindhome (she hosts Making It here at Nerdist) and Kate Micucci better known together as the aforementioned delightful and sharp-tongued Garfunkel and Oates. Their series will center on their aspirations and misadventures the two have well documented in their songs. It’s unclear how the songs will play exactly into the show in regards to them being realistically motivated or merely sung in the moment like a musical. Still, songs like “29/31” should play out great on the show in either direction.
The opening of the Garfunkel and Oates is minimalist compared to something like the intricate moving of furniture and set pieces in the opening for New Girl or a montage of various moments of the show like so many sitcoms have done over the years. Many of their music videos are simply just Riki and Kate singing and that’s all the duo seems to need. So, Riki and Kate doing choreographed rolling and tumbling throughout an apartment works just fine for them.
