The Offspring’s “Pretty Fly (For a White Guy)” as Sung by 230 Movies

There are those that would call the band The Offspring the voice of a generation. I don’t know any of these strange people myself, so if you do, please send me their email addresses because I have a lot of questions for them.

In the meantime we can all indulge in a little bit of internet silliness with their hit song from 1998, “Pretty Fly (For a White Guy),” as performed by 230 different movies. (And yes it was most definitely a hit, as it charted around the world, hitting number one in multiple countries, and reaching quadruple platinum in the UK. The 90s were a strange time, we just didn’t notice because ,compared to the ’80s, things didn’t seem that weird.)

Made by YouTube user The Unusual Suspect, this mash-up performance combines an array of different types of films, ranging from Austin Powers to The Big Lebowski to A Few Good Men to Spongebob Squarepants to Star Trek IV, all to piece together the lyrical tour de force that we remember as an intimate and serious look at white appropriation of black culture at the end of the 20th century.

Okay, it isn’t really a tour de force… of any kind. And you can definitely ignore the “intimate” part. Oh and it definitely wasn’t “serious.” Nor was it trying to actually do anything like I just claimed.

But it did have lyrics. It definitely had lyrics. Hence all the movies needed here.

It also lent itself to a Weird Al parody.

So even though The Offspring wasn’t the voice of a generation…now this thing exists. It’s definitely a thing. That someone made, and we all just listened to.

Now that I think about it the 21st century has been weird too.

What’s your favorite song by the band? Tell us in the comments below.
