The Next X-MEN Film Will Take Place in the ’90s

In just a few weeks, the X-Men are heading to the ’80s in X-Men: Apocalypse. And while the next film in the mutant series isn’t currently on 20th Century Fox’s release schedule, we now know when that movie will take place!

X-Men producer Simon Kinberg told ComingSoon that “the next one is set in the ’90s.” That makes sense, considering that the last two X-Men films have advanced the timeline by about a decade. The first X-Men movie was released in 2000, which means that the next film would be very close to catching up to the time period of the original cinematic X-Men.

The X-Men were at the height of their popularity during the ’90s, and it would be interesting to finally see the movies embracing the superhero aesthetics of the era. The trailers and photos from X-Men: Apocalypse strongly suggest that the film franchise is already moving in that direction. The new Cyclops, Tye Sheridan is reportedly signed for two more X-Men movies, which means that the next sequel is probably just a few years away from production.  Maybe we’ll even see Channing Tatum‘s Gambit and a new Rogue in the next one.

There is also the possibility that the next X-Men film won’t even be about the titular team. The New Mutants movie has been building up some buzz with casting rumors that were quickly shot down by Fox. But there may have been some truth to those rumors, as director Josh Boone recently teased a New Mutants lineup that featured almost all of the initial members of that team.

Are you eager to see the X-Men films move into the ’90s? And which film should go first: New Mutants or the next X-Men movie? Enter the Astral Plane and share your thoughts in the comment section below!
