Late last year, Paramount Pictures began putting together a new Friday the 13th movie with Michael Bayâs Platinum Dunes, lining up a new script from Aaron Guzikowski (Contraband) for the project. According to a new interview with Platinum Dunesâ Brad Fuller, this is going to be a hard reboot of the film franchise with some big changes for the series’ famous slasher, Jason Voorhees.
âAaronâs story has great characters,â said Fuller while speaking with The Reel Word. âYou kind of have to understand Jason Voorhees, so we go back and we kind of started over and work our way forward.â He added that the new story is âorigin-ish, but itâs an origin that no one has seen before. Obviously Pamelaâs there, but itâs a little bit different from what youâve seen before.â
To be honest, the original Friday the 13th films were never very clear about Jasonâs origin in the first place. It was Jasonâs death as a child that supposedly drove his mother, Pamela Voorhees, to kill the teens in the first film. But then, without explanation, Jason showed up as a disfigured adult in Friday the 13th Part 2 and became one of the most famous serial killers in the history of cinema. There have been some theories about how Jason could have been resurrected and transformed into his adult persona, but there hasnât been a definitive origin tale…yet.
The interview with Fuller also contains the welcome news that the rumored âfound footageâ Friday the 13th movie isnât happening. Fuller admitted that the possibility was considered, before reiterating that he âwas not going to do that because I donât think that can exist in Jason Voorheesâ world.â
The next Friday the 13th film is currently scheduled for January 13, 2017.
