The Music Geek Track of the Week: “An Argument With Myself”

This week, Matt G. and I Skyped a bit. Besides helping him with his girl problems, we also touched on our favorite topic, music, and, specifically, what merited our track of the week choices. Should we pick based on popularity, obscurity, relevance, or “whatever the heck we feel like writing about” that Friday morning? Or maybe since this site encourages its fair share of nerd porn, should we just stick to posting badass dubstep and jazz remixes of Game of Thrones and Twin Peaks soundtracks? I’d be happy with either.

Then I thought how silly it was to be spending all this time trying to categorize what specific factors a song needed to maintain the perfect balance between solid, blog-worthy music, and being nerdy. All music is nerdy. Whether we read Pitchfork or Billboard, listen to Mariah Carey or S.C.U.M., us nerds invest time out of our day to browse different sounds that twist, bend and pound our emotions into mush. So, as much as I’d like to post a track off Watch The Throne this week, and be ripped to pieces by our readers for being too mainstream, I’m not going to do it… I still have feelings.

When I heard Jens Lekman published the title track from his new EP, “An Argument With Myself” it seemed to be an appropriate song for this week’s feature. Jens Lekman is one of my favorite musicians. It’s been 4 years since the release of Night Falls Over Kortedala. Four freaking years! Then outta nowhere, “An Argument With Myself” dropped this week! It contains everything that makes Jens, well, Jens.

He’s a shepherd, and led me right back to his old-school Swedish vocals paired with clever, peachy tales of everyday life. He’s a lovable jokester and it is bolded, underlined and highlighted in this song. It swings through fast-paced guitar, comparable even to some Caribbean tunes. Arranged with light percussion and a chatty interlude, the song sounds sort of like what you’d think those pugs that like tilting their heads listen to (it’s adorable). He’s literal in the best sense of the word. The song reaches a point where he even sings “Why are you hitting yourself? Why are you hitting yourself?” Musicians that incorporate their sense of humor will always been favorites of mine. I have missed him dearly, but it’s like he’s never left.

Also, I change my mind about the whole not posting about Watch The Throne. I feel it contains too much awesomesauce to ignore.

Yes! One of my all-time favorite artists and I’m so excited for Jens’ first release in years. I have been playing “An Argument With Myself” for the entire week on repeat and it puts me in such a good mood. Can’t wait for the EP.
