THE MUMMY DEMASTERED Gives Universal’s Dark Universe a 16-Bit Reboot

Earlier this year, Universal’s reboot of The Mummy was supposed to introduce fans to “a new world of Gods and Monsters.” But it turns out that the Dark Universe‘s greatest threat may have been the tepid box office response that seems to have halted Universal’s plans for the monster version of the Avengers. Even the Bride of Frankenstein reboot is currently off of the board as Universal figures out its next move. Right now, the best thing about the Dark Universe may be the upcoming video game, The Mummy Demastered, which re-imagines the entire story in a 16-bit style landscape.

Instead of following Tom Cruise as a young man named Nick Morton, the lead character of The Mummy Demastered is a soldier who doesn’t put up with Princess Ahmanet’s plans to unleash the powers of the god Set. WayForward’s game is fully licensed by Universal, and it seems to borrow elements from Contra, Castlevania, and Metroid for a true throwback experience. And it looks really fun.

There is a very loose association between the story of the game and the plot of the film. The unnamed soldier controlled by the player works for Henry Jekyll’s Prodigium organization, which was shoehorned into the movie as some kind of S.H.I.E.L.D. analogue. Call us crazy, but fighting Ahmanet and her supernatural giant spider at the same time seems like it will be a lot more entertaining in 16-bit.

The Mummy Demastered will be released on October 24 for Playstation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
