Get ready to go back to magic school! Syfy has ordered the 12-episode series adaptation of Lev Grossman’s bestselling The Magicians series, and this reader is ridiculously excited.

In case you haven’t had a chance to tackle the series, Grossman’s novels are everything you loved about Harry Potter and The Chronicles of Narnia, with fortifying dashes of present day, grownup problems, and magical laws that can’t be broken. Well, some of the characters might argue with me on that whole “laws that can’t be broken” part, but I’m sticking to it! We meet Quentin Coldwater, our protagonist who will be played by Jason Ralph (A Most Violent Year) in the upcoming series, when he enrolls in a prestigious and highly selective school outside of New York City. While Brakebills College isn’t exactly what it seems to be to the non-magical folks around it, the education he gets sets the foundation for the following two books and introduces characters you will love to hate and hate to love.

“Ever since The Magicians was published, I’ve wanted to see this story onscreen,” Grossman told Deadline.com. “The people, the school, the other worlds, the magic. I’m so thrilled that it’s finally happening, and I’m beyond thrilled that we found the right people to do it.”

The series is being written by John McNamara (Aquarius) and Sera Gamble (Supernatural) for Michael London’s Groundswell Productions and Universal Cable Productions. Other cast members include Stella Maeve (Chicago P.D.), Hale Appleman (Teeth), Seth Meriweather (The Duff), Arjun Gupta (Nurse Jackie), Sosie Bacon (Wishin’ and Hopin’) and Summer Bishil (Towelhead). They are expected to start filming this summer in Vancouver.

The final book in the series was published last summer to roaring success. So if you’re looking for some fun summer reading now that winter seems to have decided to be through with us, make sure your dive into this series so that you’re all ready when the show premieres.
