The Lonely Island Pay the Silliest of Tributes to Will Smith

Did you guys know that Will Smith isn’t just the guy who’s gonna play Deadshot in this summer’s Suicide Squad movie? Nor is he just the dude who was in Concussion and Focus in recent years. He’s actually—get ready for it—been one of the biggest stars in the world for going on 20 years.

As though I needed to tell you any of that, of course. The entertainment draw of Smith has been well documented with only a few minor missteps along the way. Who better, then, to receive the Generation Award at this weekend’s MTV Movie Awards? He’s legitimately been the star of a generation. But, being the MTV Movie Awards, they didn’t just offer a series of clips or footage to mark his longevity; they got comedy musicians The Lonely Island to perform snippets of songs he sang.

Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone, and Akiva Schaeffer took to the weird, circular stage in the middle of a bunch of people to perform Smith hits “Parents Just Don’t Understand,” “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,” “Summertime,” and “Men in Black” before deciding to to replay all the songs backwards at the same time. A dumb idea, which Samberg admitted, until they just decided on “Gettin’ Jiggy Wit It.” If you think I didn’t listen to Big Willie Style six million times when I was a kid, then you are a wrong wrongo. Even Daisy Ridley gets down with it.
