THE LEGO MOVIE 2 Trailer Goes Full MAD MAX, and Then to Space!

Much like Avengers: Infinity War instantaneously undid the uplifting ending of Thor: Ragnarok, The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part seems built from the ground up on the notion that everything pretty much went to rubble immediately after we parted ways with Emmet and Wyldstyle (a.k.a. Lucy) back in 2014. Though rid of the tyranny of Lord Business, Bricksburg seems to have descended into a Mad Max: Fury Road-style apocalypse, with everyone except Chris Pratt’s perpetually cheery everyman-slash-chosen one souring quickly on the new vibes. And that’s only the beginning of the adventures awaiting our heroes in the aptly dubbed The Second Part.

Ostensible mayhem and peril aside, the trailer for the forthcoming LEGO Movie sequel drops hints that perhaps this new turn of events—couriered by a space invader voiced by Stephanie Beatriz—might not be motivated by evil whatsoever.

In fact, if a few choice remarks are any indication, The LEGO Movie 2 seems to exist as a direct response for The LEGO Movie defaulting to action cinema’s tired old trope of slapping the lead male with “hero” status despite the woman by his side being truly responsible for saving the day proper. Such was invariably the case with Emmet and Lucy, and Beatriz’s intergalactic traveler seems hellbent on carrying that point home.

(Given that The LEGO Movie concluded with actual human boy/Brickburg overlord Finn reluctantly allowing his younger sister into the realm of LEGO, perhaps we can expect that she’ll be behind this new drive to better appreciate the unsung female heroes who occupy her brother’s vast imaginary landscape.)
