THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE Trailer Is as Delightfully Silly as You’d Imagine

On the spectrum of cinematic tone, there’s a pretty healthy distance between The LEGO Movie and this weekend’s big release, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. In stark contrast with the motto of the 2014 animated hit, everything isn’t so much “awesome” in the world of Batman V Superman as it is “riddled with gloom and pain.” And yet, from these diametrically opposed canons, we reap the bounties of what promises to be another big screen splendor: The LEGO Batman Movie.

Though LEGO Movie writers/directors Chris Miller and Phil Lord have jumped ship on the building block franchise, the first trailer for LEGO Batman seems fairly in step with the irreverently silly sense of humor of its predecessor. With a background helming Adult Swim properties like Robot Chicken and Morel Orel, director Chris McKay should be well prepared to handle the breakneck comic pace that made The LEGO Movie so much fun.

We spend the duration of the new trailer with returning champion Will Arnett, who established the kind of Batman we’d be willing to follow through a whole series of movies. Though not on display in the clip (Bruce Wayne rides solo here, save for a quick chat with his Siri-esque Bacave computer), Arnett will be joined by Michael Cera as Robin, Rosario Dawson as Batgirl, the great Ralph Fiennes as Alfred, and Zach Galifianakis as The Joker.

Considering the proclivity of Batfans to hold varied actors up against one another, it’ll be fun to see a new team take on the protectors and villains of Gotham City—especially in a year like this one, which is introducing a whole new rung of performers into the mix. How will Arnett compare with Ben Affleck, or Galifianakis with Jared Leto?

If nothing else, the LEGO Batman versions will probably be… let’s say, more chipper. Are you as excited for LEGO Batman as you are for Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad? Let us know!
