The LEGEND OF ZELDA: BREATH OF THE WILD Expansion Pack Includes New Modes and Callbacks

The Legend of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild is the largest Zelda title of all time in terms of its in-game world, and the adventure is set to get even bigger this summer when the first DLC expansion pack will be released. Details have been scant about what new features these expansions will include, but now Nintendo has pulled back the curtain and is letting us know some of what will be included.

We know now that the DLC will introduce four pretty significant features to the game. One of which is a new hard mode, which should make it more challenging for speedrunners to beat the game in under an hour. Enemies will gradually regain health, and they’ll also all be powered up by one level (Red Bokoblins will now be Blue Bokoblins in hard mode, for instance) and have a higher maximum level.

There will also be a new challenge mode called “Trial of the Sword,” which takes place at “a certain sacred location” and pits Link against waves of enemies–this on top of the fact that you start with no weapons or equipment. Nintendo says there are about 45 rooms in this mode, and if you clear them all, the Master Sword will be made stronger and “will always be in its glowing powered-up state while usable.”

The update also introduces a new item called the Travel Medallion, which will let you set your current location as a fast travel point on the map. Only one location can be marked in this way, so use the medallion wisely. The other major addition in the update is “Hero’s Path Mode,” which tracks the journey Link has taken on the map over the most recent 200 hours of gameplay, so players can see where they’ve spent a lot of time and identify more lightly traveled areas.

Those are the major game-altering additions, but the new armor is nothing to scoff at too, since you’ll be able to equip yourself with Majora’s Mask and even a full Tingle outfit. Check those out on Nintendo’s website, and let us know in the comments which new feature you’re most excited about.
