In just a few weeks, Marvel’s mutant heroes will be back on the big screen with X-Men: Apocalypse, which serves as the live-action debut for one of the X-Men‘s greatest enemies. Apocalypse made his animated debut over twenty years ago in the first X-Men animated series, which faithfully translated his appearance from the comics  while giving him the commanding voice of sci-fi veteran John Colicos.
YouTube user Philysteak has taken the audio and music from the final X-Men: Apocalypse trailer and recut it with footage from the X-Men animated series. While we don’t get to hear Colicos and the classic X-Men voice cast, it’s unexpectedly compelling to see the X-Men: Apocalypse story with both the X-Men and Apocalypse in their classic costumes. The live-action X-Men franchise has been slowly moving in that direction for the last three movies, but nothing beats the cartoon outfits!
What’s impressive about this video is that it even manages to include Nightcrawler, though his appearances in this animated series were very limited. Mystique was also handled very differently in the X-Men cartoon. Contrary to what the movies would have you believe, Mystique was a villain for most of her existence in the comics. While there have been comic book stories that painted Mystique in a more sympathetic light, the heroic incarnation of the character played by Jennifer Lawrence is an invention of the film franchise, because how can you hate Jennifer Lawrence?
