THE LAST FIVE YEARS Trailer Proves Anna Kendrick is the Current Movie-Musical Queen

We’re fairly certain there’s a sort of Anna Kendrick-shaped bat signal that must go up every time a Hollywood studio decides to do a musical movie, because homegirl has currently got the genre on lock. First there was Pitch Perfect (and its forthcoming sequel), now Into the Woods, and soon: The Last Five Years. The beloved and acclaimed off-Broadway musical over which theater fans go absolutely nutters has been given a big screen adaptation starring the aforementioned and all-powerful (seriously, listen to those belts) Kendrick and former Smash star Jeremy Jordan. And if you’re into songified feels, this is going to be the one for you.

In a new trailer that debuted on Monday morning, we learn that The Last Five Years is a story of one relationship (Jamie and Cathy) from two different perspectives: his starting from the beginning of it all, and hers from the end of it. It’s a powerful structure that creates an emotional storyline about one relationship and how sometimes — even with the best of intentions and hopes for the future — things simply fall apart.

But hey — at least there’s singing, right? Yeah well, if you haven’t seen the original musical then you have no IDEA just how much singing awaits you. It’s a lot. Like, the whole entire musical. Get ready for a veritable smorgasbord of sing, sing, sing, siiiiingiiiiiiing!

Though there’s no official release date yet, The Last Five Years will hit theaters in 2015.

Already saw this one at tiff, and it was a really good film. It looks absolutely beautiful and anna and jeremy do insane jobs. Its such a fun, heart wrenching movie.

  2. Amber says:

It just won’t work on the screen. US distributors know that and it’s taken them forever to find a distributor. Anna and Jeremy are wonderful, talented people. The LY5s needed to remain a brilliant stage show.

    • Buddy says:

Not to burst your bubble or anything but as a lifelong musical theatre nerd and a longtime L5Y fan, it’s actually an incredible film and it was picked up by a distributor before it’s debut at the Toronto International Film Festival. Like way before. But you’re right, Anna and Jeremy ARE wonderful, talented people. So give ’em a chance. On Feb 13th, 2015. They won’t disappoint.

      • Amber says:

I was simply saying it took a while for a US distributor to pick it up.,..I know nothing of Canada. Also lifelong musical nerd (lucky enough to see the original – Northlight not Off Broadway)…so sort of passionate.  I am entitled to my opinion…which is that it works better on stage (I also vehemently hated Les Miserables on the silver screen – so take that for what you will).

      • Amber says:

No bubble burst by the way.  I know that as of August it hadn’t been picked up by a US distributor…I think it was finally picked up in Nov…good for the studios bottom line!
