amazing episode–and i loved the discussion on rape/rape culture. todd may be right, the other student may have been assaulted herself. my first thought was that this was a way for her to feel safe. if rapists only attack those who “deserve” it for whatever reason (being drunk or passed out, for example) she doesn’t have to worry about being targeted. idk if that makes sense.
and i don’t think it’s necessary to convince individual people that they are wrong. if you have the energy, sure. but after a while it leads to sexism fatigue, and that doesn’t help at all. as to how things change…i’d say being part of activist groups that try to change legislature, corporate attitudes etc. Calling people out and making sure people and companies face consequences for their bigotry.
whew, that was long and probably made no sense…but yeah. as always, fantastic show.
LOVED everything about this episode. Especially the victim blaming conversation…the listener sounds amazing and handled the situation perfectly. I really enjoyed ( and agreed) with all of yours and Kristens’ points.

Thank you so much for having such thoughtful discussion about rape and victim blaming. I feel like I’m constantly having to push back against attitudes like the one your listener encountered, and it is a weight off to hear other people express the same concerns/disbelief I feel.
I loved Kristen on 30 rock , but this podcast has solidified me as a fan of hers for life!
Janet, your podcast is such a beautiful, hilarious, smart little corner of the internet and it feels like a haven for a feminist with a sense of humour. If you ever feel the need to share a drink (or a butterfinger) with an adoring fan while you’re in Toronto, I volunteer myself.
(And I’ve always thought what was inside of Butterfinger bars is a sort of peanut-butter spackle. But KS is right, it’s a bit like a toffee…)

I’d be interested to know what school the listener who wrote in goes to. That sort of mindset is very common where I am, and honestly, I’ve learned to keep my mouth shut. If you speak up and then find yourself arguing with over half the class, you aren’t going to represent your cause very well and could do more harm than good. I’ve found that mindsets like that often come from being raised in religions that don’t value women, and that can be a very hard thing to combat. I just try to live my life in a way that shows that I value all people equally, regardless of gender, race, sexuality, ect, and people take note of that.
I can only imagine Heaven as having an ice cream with Kristen Schaal.
And, speaking of Anthony Keidis, he did feel the need to sexually harass, in a very crude/adolescent way, a friendly acquaintance of mine…and when she pursued it through the courts (he was convicted of a sexual assault misdemeanor and served one day of a week’s sentence in Fairfax County Jail), she discovered that other campus program board and other college/uni women had had similar “fun” but allowed the band (the other members had clustered around while AK pulled out his crank and rubbed it on her) to bribe them into silence–they contacted her when she made some noise through the college booking press. Happily, she was able to parlay his criminal conviction into a civil suit, which was settled out of court.
But thank goodness they’re in the Hall of Fame. (I never much liked their music…if any band is likely to fit the Schaal caricature…whiny, entitled fratboy partiers probably would…)
Rude girls are colleagues of rude boys, in Jamaica (particularly back when)…low level crooks and crook wannabes, or in that sense, “punks”…any surprise that ska and punk might cross-riff so heavily?
I suspect that other student might’ve been raped, too, and blaming herself or trying to reject the notion that she was actually victimized (easily. she could simply be a woman who doesn’t much like women, or has problems with drunkenness). Also, one simply might not convince the dead-set opponent…but swaying the majority might be the best one can hope for, and what does bring about change.

Vancouver is nice (but hasn’t been nice to me, I think it doesn’t like me for some reason), Toronto is not as boring as some like to think it is, but Janet, you have to go to Montréal, because you’re missing out.
