Scott- mostly I agree about the movie/novel thing- I like the parallel universe idea. But not with Wrinkle. Just. Can’t. Do. It. And I entirely abandoned names for the listener. I guess I should revisit that. No one can accuse me of having TOO big of an ego I guess/hope!

Keith- I’m having your old roommate bumped off.
I have a few people in my life who fall into the category of “oh I don’t want to run into that person.” Though, I am definitely not the type of person who would say, “that person screwed me over,” etc. I typically wish well to those that I don’t want to run into. I would say it is actually a result of not feeling competent with sticking up for myself, or being capable to ask for what I want, or not wanting to make others feel uncomfortable. So for instance I really don’t want to EVER see my roommate from college because I have a lot of built up resentment toward him, not because he didn’t do his dishes, ever, but because I could never bring it up and it just built into this massive thing until the relationship just broke. There are other variations of this for me with people who I used to be great friends with, but for whatever reason couldn’t ever be authentic with them. Finally, there are people in my profession whom I know to have talked badly about my work, and I don’t want to be around them because it is difficult for me, but I don’t feel powerful enough to confront them on it.
Just thoughts about a different side of this situation.
such a fantastic podcast, as always. i particularly loved your explanation of how we “see” characters when we read. i could not have put it better. that why books are so amazing to me–and why i spent so many weekends just trapped in bed with books as a teenager.

Welcome back Janet! Hope you had a great time with in NZ! Will there be a slide show presentation? There HAS TO BE a slide show!! It was fun hearing you talk about ‘A Wrinkle in Time” during the podcast! My policy on novels into movies (becasue one must have an official, international diplomatic policy about this) is that the world we create in our heads for novels (and that was a great description of the process) and the world a movie version shows are like parallel universes, similar but different enough that 1 won’t ruin the other. If the collective name for your podcast fans is still undecided, I’d like to remind you that you once thought the M.A.S.H.ups was pretty good, just recallin’!
For some weird reason, I actually liked Sara’s Palin videos. Hopefully a good listen.
I used to avoid people when trying to read, but it was mostly because I was so distractible. I also used to have these vivid dreams of uncovering a secret passage or hidden floor in my house, and it would have been awesome to find a place like that in real life and devour a book there.
Sword swallower? Someone’s been watching Game of Thrones (gotta love Diana Rigg’s character, and her performance)…
And a tree imparting wisdom, I wrote a fantasy story about that in sixth grade. Then the tree got tricked by some scoundrel, and got new wisdom out of that, the “wisdom of time”, whatever that means. I wish I remembered more of that story, but yeah la mémoire est une faculté qui oublie, as we say in French.
Oh yeah, currently there’s a big (10-15 minutes?) hole at the end of the podcast, followed by the end of Tina’s episode before the closing music. You might want to edit that out.
