The JV Club #15: Beth Dover and Erica Oyama

It’s a two-fer-one this week with Burning Love‘s co-creator, Erica Oyama, and one of the series’ stars, Beth Dover! If old gum commercials are right, that means double the fun– with tidbits about working at the South Korean version of Disneyland, martial arts in Alabama, fictitious daring nursing home escapes, and a stirring rendition of “Angel of Montgomery.”

I grew up in Brandon,Fl and now go to the University of Florida. I realize that means nothing to anybody else, I just thought that was cool to hear someone mention my hometown &university. Anyway, i’m new to this podcast but i’m quickly making my way through them. I haven’t come across one that I haven’t liked. The conversations are not only entertaining, but completely relatable.

  2. Eric Song says:

Wow, I really connected to this podcast in a few different ways. First, I completely understand what Erica was talking about with being one of only a handful of Asians at school and how kids would make comments about it (Hey, Bruce Lee!). That was definitely more in elementary and middle school, but it could be rough at that age. I learned to cope by just ignoring it and then just laughing it off as I got older, but I think those experiences made me wish I could blend in to the crowd a little more and not really be noticed. Now I can appreciate being different, but it definitely took time.

I also think it was awesome that Beth spent some time in South Korea growing up. Both my parents emigrated from there, and we visited when I was 8 and I still have a lot of fond memories from that time. I’d like to go back, although I’m sorry to say I can’t really speak the language anymore. It’d definitely be a heck of a crash course in relearning it, though.

I really enjoyed the brief conversation about friends’ relationships, too. Movies and TV shows romanticize things a little too much, so it’s always great to look around and see the ones that work and what it takes to keep them strong. They’re not always perfect, but you can always tell who’s willing to compromise because they really do care for each other. It’s kinda sappy, but isn’t that what everyone really wants in a relationship?

Anyway, another awesome podcast, Janet! I’ll be caught up in no time, so if you can suggest any podcasts that are half as cool as yours, I’d definitely appreciate it.

  3. Stephanie says:

I really like this episode, but I wish they each got their own episode. They both were so interesting that we needed an hour with each. I am enjoying Burning Love.

  4. Pagesbs says:

Damn, woman! I love your podcast more & more every week! I have never had the urge to go sing karaoke. Now I want to go to Nine Tight & join all of you so you can hold my hand, be supportive & give encouragement during my first attempt. You know some really great people Janet! You are a lucky woman. –Page

  5. Zuri says:

I’m a late driver too! I didn’t drive much until 22 when I moved to LA, my license expired and I had to take the test again.

  6. listener participation says:

My favorite karaoke song is DEVO “Whip It.”

    Trust DEVO.

  7. Tsuliwaensis says:

yeah, I have the same problem, lola. I’m from germany and could watch the first three episodes without any problems, now they’re all blocked. drives me nuts that there are new episodes out and I can’t watch them. I loved the first three episodes, the show is awesome! I just hope someone made a mistake or something and they’ll fix it at some point… ’cause why wouldn’t you want an international audience? just doesn’t make any sense…

  8. Lola says:

Firstly, I have to say I love this podcast. I have been listening since episode one because I have heard great things about you in relation to SF Sketchfest and how hard you work. Secondly, I started watching “Burning Love” which is so funny and kickass. However, I guess the Yahoo website picked up on the fact that I live in Uruguay (You have a listener in South America! There must be more.) and now it does not let me watch any of the new ones coming out. Is there another way to watch the episodes? Thank you for the wonderful podcast and for constantly reminding me that being a nerdy, esoteric girl has its endless benefits. DFTBA (Don’t Forget to Be Awesome) – A Nerdfighter saying. You would love John and Hank Green.

  9. Jess says:

I think my favorite part of this episode is the Kereoke (I cannot spell that word, sorry) practice time!

  10. Todd Mason says:

Wow, your guests genuinely do sound great singing together, and you with more confidence in the song might well blend well with them…you’re definitely an alto to their soprani.

The Roches. Dunno how much of their stuff is available for karaoke, but singing along with…
