THE HUNGER GAMES Will Live On in Prequel Movies

Big news for all the Tributes, Peetaphiles, Hungry Hippos, or whatever fans of the Hunger Games series are calling themselves these days! The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 2 may have finally hit theaters, but Lionsgate has no intention of letting the franchise wither away. During the UBS Global Media and Communications Conference on Tuesday in New York, Lionsgate vice-chairman Michael Burns announced that the studio the cinematic adventures of Katniss and friends will “live on and on.” But, like…is this a good thing? With the final Hunger Games film performing worse than any of its predecessors and the literary source material running out, is there any point at all in returning to Panem?

Well, according to hints from Burns and series director Francis Lawrence, the only way future Hunger Games films could go is backwards — meaning that we might have some prequels in our future. Will they focus on Haymitch’s tragic teenage Quarter Quell adventures? The Dark Days after the fall of the first rebellion, and the creation of the original Hunger Games? An All the President’s Men-style journalism thriller starring a young Caesar Flickerman?!  Whichever way they go, we know this for certain: people will be hungry, and there will be games.
