THE HUNGER GAMES’ “Mockingjay” Already Exists!

If a society has mastered genetic engineering, then it could likely solve a food shortage. Never mind, let’s move on.

In my latest Because Science, I volunteer as tribute to explain where you could get a real-life mockingjay from The Hunger Games and how our own genetic engineering efforts are far less deadly than a lizard-man that can bite your head off. We’ve inserted genes into kitties that make them glow in the dark to study HIV. We’ve engineered salmon to grow like there is no tomorrow to help fight overfishing. We’ve even started researching how to genetically engineer mosquitoes so that after they mate, all the offspring get wiped out.

Now that’s a dystopia — at least for mosquitoes.
