THE HATEFUL EIGHT Wide Release Moved Up to New Year’s Day

No time like the present — as they say — and apparently there’s no time like the holidays to get people excited to see prestige movies. And no film has gotten cinephiles (myself much included) excited quite like Quentin Tarantino‘s The Hateful Eight, his second spaghetti western-inspired outing following 2012’s Oscar-winning Django Unchained. This is why I’m pretty pumped by the news that Hateful Eight‘s wide theatrical run is getting moved up a week, from January 8, 2016, to January 1! New Year’s Day, friends, will be full of hate and eight.

This move will only affect the film’s 35mm and digital projection screenings, but not in any way change the release schedule of the 70mm “Roadshow” version that’s hittin’ the country roads come Christmas. The wide release will be in as many theaters as they can get on January 1, before going even wider on the original release date. Despite other huge holiday films (*cough* Star Wars: The Force Awakens *cough*), the first spate of critics have given the film a very strong reaction and The Weinstein Company is confident theater owners will find room in their packed houses for a bit of snowy cowboy action.

A Tarantino movie is always reason for people to take notice, but his most recent two films — Django Unchained and Inglourious Basterds — have been some of his absolute best. Another chance to see him take on the western genre, especially with a new original score by composing legend Ennio Morricone, is something a movie fan shouldn’t want to pass up.

Are you excited for The Hateful Eight? Will you go see it in all the formats just because you can? Let us know in the comments below!
