This fall, Dr. Seuss‘ How the Grinch Stole Christmas will receive a brand new animated adaptation from Universal Pictures and Illumination. Benedict Cumberbatch is stepping into the title role of The Grinch, and the first trailer has a distinctly Despicable Me feel. In these new clips, we get to witness the Grinch’s daily life inside of his tricked out cave, as well as his random acts of cruelty. But can you really blame him for being in such a perpetually bad mood? We feel the same way whenever “Happy” starts playing.
The description for the movie was released with the trailer, and it reveals that the Grinch has a different motivation for stealing Christmas from the residents of Who-ville. This Grinch isn’t just fueled by spite (although, there is definitely spite). Instead, his grievance with the Whos is largely about the noise they make during the holiday season. It gets louder and louder every year until the Grinch decides he can’t take it anymore. So he’ll simply strip the town of its Christmas cheer once and for all.
Cindy-Lou Who is also getting a larger role in this retelling. She and her friends have hatched a plot “to trap Santa Claus.” That said, she’s not trying to shake down St. Nick for more presents. Instead, she wants to “thank him for help for her overworked single mother.” On Christmas Eve, Cindy-Lou’s plans will collide with the Grinch’s agenda. And if events play out the way they did in the original, then someone’s heart may grow three sizes that day. It might be a good idea to have a cardiologist on call!
The Grinch will open in theaters on Friday, November 9.
