An aspect of Star Wars I absolutely love is how it inspires fans to create. Fans make art, write music, and craft costumes because of the galaxy far, far away. The release of The Force Awakens has awakened the creative force. Photos of Rey costumes, fan art depicting Poe and Finn, and models of the Finalizer and First Order TIE fighters are all over my social media feeds. I’ll be highlighting lots of those images in Fan Art Friday round-ups throughout January, but this series couldn’t wait. Artist Brian Kesinger has combined The Force Awakens with Calvin and Hobbes, and the results are ridiculously cute.
The series features Finn, Poe, BB-8, Kylo Ren, and even Darth Vader. The composition is reminiscent of Calvin and Hobbes strips, and they really capture the joy and innoncence of those comics. This image of Rey and BB-8 sledding down the sandy slopes of Jakku is particularly wonderful.
While The Force Awakens has its share of dark and heavy moments, it also contains plenty of laughs. I think the comedy present in the film is one reason these mash-ups work so well. I want a whole book of them.
See the rest of the series in the gallery below. To keep tabs on Kesinger’s latest projects (and trust me, you want to), follow him on Instagram. You can buy prints, books, and all sorts of original designs at his Etsy shop.
