For cosmic explorersâa euphemism for both the curious and the stonedââThe Dark Side of Ozâ is a rite of passage. The eerily synchronous mash-up of Pink Floydâs Dark Side of the Moon and The Wizard of Oz has impressed many-a-dorm room. Also known as âThe Dark Side of the Rainbowâ and âThe Wizard of Floyd,â the phenomenon works by using the Floyd record as the filmâs score. Just turn the volume up on the record player and down on the TV, hit play, and watch as visual and audio cues align, evoking a wild sense of synesthesia thatâs been blowing minds for decades.
Apparently, three consecutive plays through the Floyd soundtrack also fits exceptionally well with The Force Awakens. A video of the filmâs first eight minutes, paired with the first eight minutes of Dark Side has surfaced (see above), and some Reddit users went ahead and documented all the notable synchronizations:
â When Poe (Oscar Isaac) wakes up in Kylo Renâs (Adam Driver) torture chamber, the lyrics of âThe Great Gig in the Skyâ go, âIâm not afraid of dying/ Anytime will do,â and the songâs scream happens right as Poe opens his own mouth.
â âTimeâ plays while we witness the repetitive mundanity of Reyâs (Daisy Ridley) life making a living by scavenging old electronics.
â The âUs and Themâ lyric âAnd after all, weâre only ordinary menâ is sung right as Finn (John Boyega) tells Rey that Resistance fighters look like him. âSome of us,â he says. âOthers look different.â
â Twice during the âKeep your hands of my stackâ line in âMoneyâ, someone grabs a lightsaber: First itâs Rey taking hold of Luke Skywalkerâs (Mark Hamill), then Han Solo (Harrison Ford) grabbing Kyloâs.
â âUs and Themâ again syncs with the battle of Battle of Takodana. As Finn surveys the battleground, the lyrics go, âGod only knows/ Itâs not what we would choose to do.â Then, as Gilmour sings, âBlue,â Finn ignites the blue blade.
â In what turns out to be his final scene, the camera focuses right on Han Solo as the lyrics, âI never said I was afraid of dyingâ are heard.
â During Kylo and Reyâs final fight, the âUs and Themâ lyrics go, âBlack and blue/ Who knows which is which and who is who,â echoing the fight between going to the Dark Side or staying with the Light Side of the Force.
â âBrain Damageâ in almost its entirety seems to fit with the movieâs final scene as Rey makes her way towards Luke: âThe lunatic is on the grass/ Remembering games, and daisy chains and laughs/ Got to keep the loonies on the path.â
