The Foo Fighters and Rick Astley Teamed Up for the World’s Best Rickroll

For over a decade, Rickrolling has been one of the most popular methods of internet pranking. Fortunately, Rick Astley has taken the ongoing joke in good humor while continuing to perform “Never Gonna Give You Up” around the world. This past weekend, Astley was invited on stage by the Foo Fighters, shortly before they Rickrolled the crowd at the Summer Sonic Festival in Japan.

Via Planet Rock, the Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl, Nate Mendel, Pat Smear, Taylor Hawkins, Chris Shiflett, and Rami Jaffee neared the end of their set before they brought Astley to the stage. Grohl told the audience that he had only met Astley a few minutes before, but called him “our new best friend.” To briefly trick the crowd, the band began playing the signature notes from Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” before Astley joined in with the familiar lyrics of “Never Gonna Give You Up.”

The video of their performance is online, but it may be considered NSFW because both Grohl and Astley drop some F-bombs in the clip.

Shortly thereafter, Grohl shared a hilarious picture of himself with Astley on the Foo Fighters’ twitter account.

Astley seemed to be equally excited to have performed with the Foo Fighters.

This may be the best live version of a Rickroll that we’ve ever seen, but we’d still love to see Astley top it at some point in the future. What did you think about Astley and the Foo Fighters’ performance? Leave a comment below, in the form of a Rickroll!
