THE FLASH Season 3 Will Officially Be FLASHPOINT

The season finale of The Flash‘s sophomore year ended with a huge and potentially show-changing cliffhanger–SPOILERS AHEAD if you haven’t seen it yet–which saw Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) traveling back in time again to save his mother from the Reverse Flash, something he tried and ultimately decided against in the first season’s culmination. But this time, he prevented her murder, and one of the final images we saw was season two Barry fading from existence, meaning that by saving her, Barry forever altered the timeline. But how much was it altered? Fans have speculated what it could mean for next year, and Monday morning saw a big reveal from Gustin and executive producer Greg Berlanti on Twitter.

That’s right, folks: Flashpoint! The massive DC Comics arc from 2011 will be the premise for season 3 of The Flash. That arc saw Barry going back in time and doing essentially the same thing: changing events and coming back to the “present” to find it completely different, and much darker and less friendly. It was also adapted into a Warner Bros Animation direct-to-DVD feature, entitled Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox.

But if you think the show will follow either of these versions exactly, Gustin assured people it would blaze its own trail, much like it has since the beginning.

So, if we’re following logic, if season 3 of The Flash will be Flashpoint, then season 4 will be rebooted into the New 52 which will last for about five years until it becomes The Flash: Rebirth, but not the same as Geoff Johns’ The Flash: Rebirth from several years earlier…boy comic book continuity is confusing.

We’ll have to wait to find out if the “Flashpoint” arc will be the entirety of season 3 or just a mini-arc within it. Another big question is whether this will have ramifications for the other DC TV Universe programs. Will Arrow be a completely different show? Oh, jeez, I hope so. Or will the already-timeline-heavy DC’s Legends of Tomorrow will be affected at all? Yet another interesting case will be if the newly-Vancouverized Supergirl will be in any way involved. Maybe they can retcon Barry effing up the timeline to converging the two universes so more crossovers can happen.

At any rate, we just got even more excited for the next season of one TV’s best sci-fi dramas. Let us know what you hope for from a Flashpoint season in the comments below!

For the record, we totally called Flashpoint weeks ago!
