THE FLASH Infographic Shows 75 Years of Costume Changes

Thanks to a highly successful television series on The CW, which just premiered its second season this week, DC Comics hero the Flash is more popular ever. Not only is the title character in the aformentioned show, but the character will also be getting the big screen treatment as well, starring Ezra Miller as the Scarlet Speedster. But long before his latest mass media success, the Flash has been a mainstay of the DC Universe since 1940, and has been in almost continuous publication.

But just like his DC Comics brethren Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman, the character has had many, many incarnations over the past seventy-five years, and just as many looks, not only in the comics, but across other media as well. With his television success no doubt making the character a popular Halloween costume this year, Halloween Costumes.com has created an infographic tracing the Flash’s costume evolution over the decades, from original Flash Jay Garrick’s costume, which looked like the Roman god Mercury, to Barry Allen’s famous red costume, to the various TV versions, and more.

Of course, no infographic is ever truly complete, and this one is no exception — it’s missing Wally West’s second Flash costume from the early ’90s, as well as his costume he wore after his uncle Barry came back from the dead, in order to differentiate himself from him visually. There’s also all those Elseworlds Flashes, but I understand why all of those might not count as official. Still, this representation of the Flash’s visual evolution is pretty spot-on otherwise, and a good guide for those looking for the Speed Force to inform their own costume this Nerdoween.
