The First Trailer for Michael Mann’s BLACKHAT Has Thor Going High Tech

It’s been over five years since the last time audiences had a taste of Michael Mann‘s unique brand of filmmaking. Even on less than well-received efforts like Public Enemies, Mann always brings a passion for big screen storytelling to the table. Now, after a lengthy hiatus from the medium, the famed director is finally returning with his latest drama, the Chris Hemsworth-starring Blackhat, and now there’s a trailer:

The first thing that comes to mind when watching this is the director’s highly underrated adaptation of Miami Vice. While initially released to mixed reviews and lackluster box office totals (the film made $163 million on a $130 million budget), the television adaptation has since gone on to find praise.

That uniqueness is what stands out when watching the trailer for Blackhat. It looks dirty, raw and beautifully under lit. Like Collateral, there’s a real opportunity with Blackhat to do something no one will forget, and Chris Hemsworth seems to be giving it his all based on what we see here. Not to mention the film also features the amazing talents of Viola Davis and Holt McCallany, two of the best character actors currently working.

Blackhat appears to be a true return to form for the Mann who gave us Heat, and that’s a good thing because, in the new age of Marvel and DC filmmaking, this is exactly the kind of film we need to balance things out at the movies.

Blackhat hits theaters January 16th.
