The First Trailer For FIFTY SHADES OF GREY Has Arrived

With most of our eyes directed at Southern California for San Diego Comic-Con, it’s easy to forget there’s a whole other part of the movie-going populous that doesn’t have the likes of Avengers: Age of Ultron at the top of their must-see movies list for 2015. So, in an attempt to play to those fine folks, Universal has unveiled the first official trailer for the much anticipated adaptation to the best-selling novel Fifty Shades of Grey. Check it out:

It’s a bit surprising that, for a movie about the world of BDSM, Universal went the green-band trailer route, especially when this clip will be making its theatrical debut with the R-rated Lucy starting tomorrow. But, the green-band did allow the studio to debut the trailer on The Today Show, which is where much of the film’s core-audience is most likely based.

As divisive as the book series may be, there’s a lot to celebrate in the fact that Universal gave the directing job of this potentially massive franchise about the emotions of a female lead to, well, a female director (Sam Taylor-Johnson). With any luck, come Valentine’s Day, we’ll see that Fifty Shades of Grey is actually a really great character drama set within the world of a volatile romance. If there’s one thing we’ve learned time and time again from films like this, it’s that the least likely to succeed are often the ones that end up surprising you.

Fifty Shades of Grey hits theaters February 13th, 2015.
