With most of our eyes directed at Southern California for San Diego Comic-Con, itâs easy to forget thereâs a whole other part of the movie-going populous that doesnât have the likes of Avengers: Age of Ultron at the top of their must-see movies list for 2015. So, in an attempt to play to those fine folks, Universal has unveiled the first official trailer for the much anticipated adaptation to the best-selling novel Fifty Shades of Grey. Check it out:
Itâs a bit surprising that, for a movie about the world of BDSM, Universal went the green-band trailer route, especially when this clip will be making its theatrical debut with the R-rated Lucy starting tomorrow. But, the green-band did allow the studio to debut the trailer on The Today Show, which is where much of the filmâs core-audience is most likely based.
As divisive as the book series may be, thereâs a lot to celebrate in the fact that Universal gave the directing job of this potentially massive franchise about the emotions of a female lead to, well, a female director (Sam Taylor-Johnson). With any luck, come Valentineâs Day, we’ll see that Fifty Shades of Grey is actually a really great character drama set within the world of a volatile romance. If thereâs one thing weâve learned time and time again from films like this, itâs that the least likely to succeed are often the ones that end up surprising you.
Fifty Shades of Grey hits theaters February 13th, 2015.
