The First STAR TREK BEYOND Teaser is Here

What’s that? There’s another sci-fi franchise out there? Surely not to be outdone by what is now the shrill and deafening fever pitch of Star Wars: The Force Awakens out in a few days time, Paramount released the first teaser for their third installment of the Star Trek reboot — this time titled Star Trek Beyond. While not directed by J.J. Abrams (he was a bit busy) but still produced by Bad Robot, Fast & Furious franchise director Justin Lin took up the helm, working from a script by Scotty actor and nerd extraordinaire Simon Pegg.

It’s impossible to tell anything from a 90-second teaser, of course, but the tone of the film appears to be in the same action-romp vein as the first films — far from a bad thing. This go-around will find Kirk (Chris Pine) and the rest of the Enterprise crew without a ship (again) and trapped on a planet filled with warlike natives — it would seem there won’t be much in the way of trekking the stars.

That said, it does have a nice piece of comedy from Karl Urban’s Dr. McCoy, who was criminally underused in Star Trek Into Darkness. And correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t see Chekhov (Anton Yelchin) anywhere in this (even though he’s listed on IMDb): will his disappearance come into play during the sequel, or is he merely not in it at all?

Everybody’s light years may vary. Star Trek Beyond will be in cinemas July 22, 2016.
