The Films of David Lynch Meet Kubrick’s THE SHINING in This Brilliant Short

Master director Stanley Kubrick‘s horror masterpiece The Shining turns 35 this year, and time has not diminished its ability to deeply disturb viewers and get under their skin. Stephen King, the author of the original novel, might not have been a fan of Kubrick’s film, but certainly time has proven him wrong; The Shining is right up there with such horror classics as The Exorcist and Psycho as one of the greatest and most influential horror films of all time. Kubrick’s use of creepy music, surreal imagery, and disturbing sound design in The Shining is unparalleled by almost any other filmmaker…except one: David Lynch, who has made a whole career out of using creepy music, surreal imagery and disturbing sound design in his films.

Now a fan of both filmmakers by the name of Richard Vezina has created a video showing what the world of Kubrick’s films might have looked like mashed together with the works of David Lynch. Vezina describes his eight minute film like this: “What would The Shining look like if it had rather been directed by David Lynch? A dream or a nightmare? Blue Shining joyfully mixes the two universes by integrating “Kubrick” elements from the films of Lynch, giving the Stephen King classic a Lynchian atmosphere.”

In Blue Shining, Vezina replaces the disturbing opening music from Kubrick’s film with the equally dark score for Mulholland Drive and uses all kinds of imagery from the entire catalog of Lynch’s works, most notably Eraserhead, Blue Velvet, Wild at Heart, Lost Highway, and of course, Twin Peaks. But even less traditionally “Lynchy” movies like Dune and The Straight Story are represented here as well. The walls of the Overlook Hotel are now filled with various Lynchian Easter eggs, you’ll have to watch this video several times to catch them all.
