THE EXORCIST TV Series Trailer Will Scare the Devil Out of You

Everything that is old is new again, and in the case of demonic possession, nothing is hotter on TV right now. This past television season saw Damien based on The Omen come to A&E and Preacher and Outcast are coming to AMC and Cinemax this summer, respectively. Now, piggy backing on the news of the full series order from Fox to bring the classic horror novel The Exorcist to the small screen, fans have gotten a first look at the much anticipated series.

The trailer is, admittedly, light on scares, instead focusing more on setting up the story. Gone are Chris and Reagan MacNeil from both William Peter Blatty’s novel and William Friedkin’s film and instead we are introduced to the Rance family, portrayed by Geena Davis, Alan Ruck, Brianne Howey, and Hannah Kasulka. The two priests in question are played by Alfonso Herrera and Ben Daniels and, according to the brief synopsis provided by Fox, will tackle one family’s case of horrifying demonic possession.

The pedigree of Geena Davis and Rupert Wyatt have me intrigued. However, from the little that we know and have seen (and that is admittedly not much) it would appear that the only thing tying the source material or the film to the series would be the iconic “Tubular Bells” song that still sends shivers up my spine. Still, I’m curious about the show and hope that Fox’s The Exorcist follows in the footsteps of an adaptation like Hannibal, pushing the boundaries of genre on network television to the next level.

The Exorcist pilot was directed by Rise of the Planet of The Apes‘ Rupert Wyatt and written by Jeremy Slater. The Exorcist is expected to debut this fall on Fox.
