We live in an era where almost anything can become a film, and sometimes, it even works out well. After all, who could have predicted that The LEGO Movie would turn out to be a really fun and terrific animated flick? However, we’re less sure about The Emoji Movie, which is coming to theaters next year. It’s going to be quite a challenge to build a story around emojis, but thanks to the new teaser trailer, we have a better idea of what to expect.
Sony Pictures Animations has released a new clip for The Emoji Movie that introduces moviegoers to Mel Meh, as voiced by Steven Wright. It’s actually kind of perfect that the emoji used to sell the film is essentially the emoji of indifference. Mel Meh is incapable of a strong reaction one way or another. In fact, his absolute lack of enthusiasm for his own film is kind of amusing. Don’t worry, Mel isn’t the main character of this story. That honor belongs to Gene, “an outsider emoji” who will be portrayed by T.J. Miller. Gene, the son of Mel, can actually assume several different expressions, which makes him a mutant emoji. The Emoji Movie will follow Gene’s quest to “become a normal emoji.” But if we know movies (and we do!), then the conclusion will probably revolve around Gene accepting himself for who he is, with everyone else coming around as well. The end!
The teaser also briefly introduces Rob Riggle’s Ice Cream Emoji and Tom Kane’s Poop Daddy. Yes, that’s the real name of the character. The trailer also appears to confirm that the world of the Emojis will be contained within a smartphone.
According to Sony, The Emoji Movie will be released on August 4, 2017. What did you think about this teaser? Respond with an emoji in the comment section below!
