Like the rising and setting of the sun and the movement of the tides, one of the true constants we can count on in this fickle world is some iteration of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim getting some type of new release every year or so. Since it came out in 2011, there’s been downloadable content, special editions, remastered re-releases, and console ports, and it doesn’t look like the six-year-old game is about to lay to rest any time soon.
For, not only will Nintendo Switch owners be able to explore Tamriel for themselves later this year; now, as announced Sonyâs E3 2017 Media Showcase, Skyrim is headed to Playstation VR.
If you thought the Skyrim map felt huge before, just wait until you’re able to strap on some goggles, turn your head, and see it all truly first-person. This version of the game includes all of the DLC add-ons (so Dawnguard, Hearthfire and Dragonborn), so it appears to be a truly uncompromised version of the best Skyrim experience.
Skyrim is already a genre-defining title, but now it has the potential to be a platform-defining piece of software as well. The first Playstation VR games only came out last year, and while a lot of them might feel like tech demos or attempts to cash in on a new fad, Skyrim has the advantage of having already been a huge success on other platforms. So, assuming that this port was done well (and we have little reason to believe it wasn’t), Skyrim could be a big moment for Playstation VR, and for virtual reality gaming in general.
Do you agree with that, or do you think VR gaming needs more than a six-year-old game to establish itself as a legitimate and popular part of the gaming sphere? Let us know what you think in the comments below!
