The DUNGEONS & DRAGONS Movie Moves Forward at Warner Bros.

For the last ten months, Hasbro and Sweetpea Entertainment have battled it out in court for the rights to produce a new Dungeons & Dragons movie. Today, the two sides announced that the case has been settled, and Warner Bros.’ long-simmering Dungeons & Dragons film adaptation is one step closer to fruition.

“We are so excited about bringing the world of Dungeons & Dragons to life on the big screen,” said Warner Bros. Pictures’ Greg Silverman. “This is far and away the most well-known brand in fantasy, which is the genre that drives the most passionate film followings. D&D has endless creative possibilities, giving our filmmakers immense opportunities to delight and thrill both fans and moviegoers new to the property.”

Originally designed by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson, Dungeons & Dragons was first released in 1974, and it quickly set the standard for fantasy tabletop role-playing games. There have been numerous iterations of the main game, the most recent coming in 2014 with the release of Dungeons & Dragons: 5th edition.

Dungeons & Dragons has also been adapted as an animated series, video games, statues, collectibles, comic books, and a feature film that was released in 2000 starring Justin Whalin, Marlon Wayans, and Jeremy Irons (which spawned two sequels that didn’t make it back into theaters). Those films were produced by Sweetpea Entertainment, which is why that company attempted to assert its rights to create any additional movies in the franchise.

The new Dungeons & Dragons movie already has a script by David Leslie Johnson (Wrath of the Titans), but there is currently no director attached or a target release date. But that should change fairly quickly now that the lawsuit has been settled.
