First, let’s just clear up any confusion: we are not talking about the Project Greenlight horror movie Feast, directed by John Gulager, that spawned a gross-out trilogy starring his father Clu. This is the “Feast” at the opposite end of the spectrum: the Disney short attached to Big Hero 6 about the hungry dog who doesn’t like his master’s wife’s health food. It won director Patrick Osborne an Oscar, so unsurprisingly he figured if the formula ain’t broke, why not make another?
The trailer for “Pearl” goes by so fast that it’s hard to tell what the story is, but like “Feast,” it looks to use cel shading and tell a story in time-lapse, this one about a girl and her father and playing music on the road. The official synopsis says “Set inside their home, a beloved hatchback, ‘Pearl’ follows a girl and her dad as they crisscross the country chasing their dreams. Itâs a story about the gifts we hand down and their power to carry love. And finding grace in the unlikeliest of places.”
Another key detail we know, thanks to Entertainment Weekly, is that this will be a 360-degree interactive film designed for mobile devices, though a 2D version with a fixed point of view will screen theatrically at the Tribeca Film festival starting today, April 17. So even though the trailer shows you a view from the front seat of the car, you could spend the whole movie staring out the back window if you like. Choices!
(I’d actually love to see a version of the Gulager film done this way, but that’s just one guy’s opinion.)
