Digging into THE DEFENDERS and DARK TOWER Trailers and Disney Parks’ AVATAR

If midweek woes have left you daydreaming about skipping town for some far-off vacation destination—maybe Pandora, or All-World, or perhaps just the mean streets of New York City—then today’s Nerdist News Talks Back has got you covered. In today’s episode, host Jessica Chobot is joined by Rachel Heine, our editor-in-chief and Alpha Book Club host, and Dan Casey, senior editor and host of The Dan Cave, to tackle the world-hopping news to hit our pop culture receptors this ordinary Wednesday morning.

We begin with the first trailer for Marvel’s new team-up series, The Defenders, which surprised the masses with some yet untapped territory for Marvel’s small screen universe: a hallway fight scene. (Kidding—they’ve done like 20 of those by now. Do they think we don’t notice, or is this becoming a warm tradition on the Marvel lot?)

Potentially, tiresome habits aside, there were a few bits to get excited about in the Defenders trailer, namely the first appearance of Sigourney Weaver. Granted, we still don’t know much about Weaver’s character, other that her name… or, possibly, alias: Alexandra. The jury’s out on whether her true identity is being kept under wraps, but Jessica and the others will dig into that for you.

Next, the trailer we’ve been waiting for for what seems like years: The Dark Tower. After an impossible stretch of anticipatory buildup, our team tries to get a handle on exactly what they think of this first look at the Stephen King adaptation.

Luckily, we’ve got the boundlessly well-read Rachel Heine on hand, armed with knowledge of the Dark Tower series that proves invaluable in just such an occasion. She’ll tap into whether or not the Dark Tower we’re seeing on screen matches the vibes of that which fans have experienced on the page.

For our last point of discussion, we step away from film and television into the real world… of James Cameron’s Avatar, which itself will down on Earth in the form of Disney Parks’ latest addition to Animal Kingdom on May 27th. This new endeavor brings about the years-old question: Avatar was huge, but does anybody still really care about it? This all-important query marks the final meaty discussion for Jessica, Rachel, and Dan, as the lot get to fawn over the admittedly very-cool-looking features of the new Disney attraction. Check them out below:

Watch above starting at 1 pm PT/4 pm ET, and chime in with your own thoughts on The Defenders, The Dark Tower, and the new Avatar park attraction!
