The DEADWOOD Movie May Have a Pulse

Nine years ago this month, HBO abruptly canceled David Milch’s acclaimed Western series Deadwood amid promises that there would be two follow-up movies to close out the show in lieu of a fourth season. Those promises were not kept, although Milch tried more than once to make it happen. And if you ever want to piss off a  Deadwood fan, bring up Milch’s subsequent HBO TV series, John From Cincinnati.

Deadwood fans and cast members have largely accepted that a movie wasn’t in the cards. But perhaps things have changed. Deadwood co-star Garret Dillahunt posted on twitter that he’s heard “credible rumors” about a Deadwood movie.

If it was just Dillahunt’s tweet, then there wouldn’t be much of a story here. But a spokesperson for HBO has responded to the newest round of rumors: “In reference to Garret Dillahunt’s tweet regarding the rumored Deadwood movie, there have only been very preliminary conversations.”

“Preliminary conversations” is more hope than Deadwood fans had yesterday. That’s pretty far from a confirmation of anything definitive. But in the new TV landscape where The X-Files, Twin Peaks, Coach, and Fuller House can get new episodes with the original stars, then perhaps Deadwood’s time has finally come.

Deadwood debuted on HBO in 2003, and it introduced viewers to Ian McShane’s Al Swearengen, a man who regularly demonstrated a Shakespearean flare for swearing. The cast also included Timothy Olyphant (Justified), Molly Parker (House of Cards), Jim Beaver (Supernatural), Dayton Callie (Sons of Anarchy), Kim Dickens (Fear the Walking Dead), Anna Gunn (Breaking Bad), and Paula Malcomson (Ray Donovan). Getting the majority of the cast members to return will be a significant challenge. But it’s not necessarily impossible.

What do you think, Deadwood fans? Do you want us to tell you something pretty about the movie’s chances? Pull up a bar stool and let us know what you’re thinking!
