THE DAN CAVE: Why RAD is The Greatest Movie of All Time

Welcome to The Dan Cave! Have you been working out? You should totally load up on turkey tomorrow because you’re looking great.

By all accounts, 1986 was one of the greatest years in cinematic history. Aliens, Platoon, Top Gun, Big Trouble in Little China, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Blue Velvet, Cobra, Labyrinth — these are but a few of the cinematic treasures that were released unto an unsuspecting public during that fateful year in filmmaking. However, far and away, there is one film that towers above the rest, looming over their legacies like the Colossus of Rhodes over the Aegean Sea. That movie is the 1986 BMX-filled classic Rad.

That’s right — Rad. And today, in a brand new The Dan Cave segment, I am going to tell you why it’s the greatest movie of all time. Or, at the bare minimum, why you need its unique brand of bicycling insanity in your life ASAP.

Do you agree with my assessment? What’s your favorite part of Rad? What other cult classic or underappreciated films would you like me to cover? Let me know in the comments below or tell me on Twitter (@Osteoferocious) using the hashtag #TheDanCave.

  1. “Miami Connection”

  2. JB says:

I’ve lived my life with Cru Jones as my idol
“when your gut talks to ya, you listen!!!”

  3. Ryan says:

The Wraith!!! Watch it and love it. Megaforce!!!!

  4. jryan3031 says:

    Jaws is better

  5. Rob M says:

Back when HBO would televise the same show 5 times a day I would watch Rad every time it came on.  It was pretty awesome.  Two kickass movies which might not ring any bells with anyone are 10 “T.A.G: The Assassination Game” starring a young Linda Hamilton and a young Robert Carradine.  It predated “Gotcha!” which stars Carradine’s Revenge of the Nerds mate Anthony Edwards and I thought more enjoyable.  2) Me and Him starring Griffin Dunne.  There’s nothing more poignant than a movie about a man and his penis.  Neither have been transferred to DVD and that my friend is a crime.

  6. Airborne would be a good one, as would a hard-to-find movie called Big Man on Campus.  (You’ll know you found it when you find the main character named Bob Maloogaloogaloogaloogalooga.)

  7. Ed says:

Along the lines of cheesy extreme sport flicks ,you should also do “Airborne”. A film about a teenaged surfer sent to live in Ohio featuring Seth Green and Jack Black.

  8. Chris says:

Awesome movie I saw this in the theaters back in the day. 2 thumbs up regardless what those 2 stuff shirts who keep sneaking in the balcony theater. Dan you should do Krull next.

  9. Curtis Archer says:

Har Mar + Rad = Pretty OK music video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EgHEeYIV62w

  10. Love this! Posted it on Bill’s FB page already. And who would disagree with your take on it?
You’d probably also appreciate the companion audio program we created: Rad: Behind the ScenesI got Bill, Bart, Eddie Fiola, Martin Aparijo, Jose Yanez, Sam Bernard (the film’s writer) and Jeremy Moser together to talk about the film. The guys tell what went into the making of the film and so much great secrets that you’ll never be able to watch the film the same way again!
Since there’s never been an official modern release of the film, we created this special feature for the fans.

  11. Shad says:

Not sure about the movie, but the soundtrack is one of the best of all time!

  12. shackman says:

hang on…no mention of gold medal winner Bart Connor as the lead baddie?!

  13. Scott says:
