Two weeks ago, the Nintendo 64 turned twenty years old. First released in Japan on June 23, 1996, the 64-bit console is responsible for not only cementing video gaming as a household hobby, but was also home to some of the greatest, most addictive games ever made. For many people, memories of hours spent mastering Super Mario 64‘s levels, hurling proximity mines at one another in GoldenEye 007, and aggressively crushing fools with Kirby’s down-smash in Super Smash Bros are some of the fondest of our youth. (Okay, maybe that last one only applies to Kyle Hill and me, but you get the point.)
On the system’s twentieth anniversary, the Nerdist editorial team took a stroll down memory lane to reminisce about their favorite Nintendo 64 games and N64-related memories. While editing that piece, I got to thinking about some of the great, underappreciated diamonds in the rough that called Nintendo’s iconic console home, games like Mischief Makers, Harvest Moon 64, and Conker’s Bad Fur Day to name a few. So, in the spirit of basking in the N64’s nostalgic rays, on today’s episode of The Dan Cave, we are celebrating some of the most overlooked and underrated Nintendo 64 games of all time.
