The Dan Cave

The Dan Cave: GODZILLA, PACIFIC RIM 2, and SKULL ISLAND in a Shared Universe?

Welcome to the premiere episode of The Dan Cave, my new weekly show in which we plumb the depths of television, film, comic books and more to bring you the choicest specimens of pop culture for your viewing pleasure. Each week we’ll take a deep dive into one of the biggest questions on nerds’ minds and break it down. Other times, we’ll probably just dissect the slow-motion bicycle-dance prom scene from Rad. The point is, we’re going to go spelunking into the heart of nerdy darkness and, unless we get eaten by the monsters from The Descent, we’ll have a good time doing it.

This week, we’re breaking down on of the biggest cinematic slates to emerge from the Thunderdome we call Comic-Con. No, not Mad Max: Fury Road, which looks freakin’ sweet, by the by. Today, we’re looking at what’s coming down the pipeline from Legendary. During their Hall H panel, moderated by my wonderful colleague Jessica Chobot, they revealed that not only will the Godzilla sequel include even more monsters than ever before, and not is Pacific Rim 2 on the way, but we’ll be taking a trip to King Kong’s past in Skull Island. Now, taken individually, all of this sounds well and good. Who doesn’t love a monstrous slugfest? But it left me with a larger question: is Legendary putting together the tools it needs for a shared cinematic universe? And that, my friends, is precisely what we’ll be talking about today!

Do you think Legendary should pursue a shared cinematic universe? Why or why not? Let us know in the comments below or tell me yourself on Twitter.

  1. Cory says:

Great show! Loved it! …but you gotta fix the tracking on that logo!

  2. MYSTERY OF FLINTY says:

Bravo Dan! Great first episode. Where did you get that badass t-shirt? Me want!

  3. Less clothes on the host guy plz.

  4. Sweet Dan’s own Show! got what I wanted 😀

  5. Atte says:

I like this! More episodes, please! And about the shared universe-I think it might work, but I highly doubt that it will happen. I’m just happy that I can see Godzilla fight King Ghidorah. And the DayMen seems very interesting, I will pick that up! Thank you, Dan.

  6. butsandstuff says:

No, don’t combine them, let the mbe individual franchises. Too big to fail is bullshit and I don’t want to see 3 franchises crushed that have barely even gotten off the ground again.

  7. capeless says:

Anybody remember the Japanese King Kong vs. Godzilla?  All the common cinematic universe talk sparked my memory.  I wan a VHS (kids ask your parents) of it when I was like 10.  I vaugely remember island natives throwing spears at a movie screen showing a giant octopus, super strong invisible thread, and King Kong got stronger when struck by lightning.  I can’t remember who won though.

  8. Jesus Loza says:

Mind blown of the thought of a shared universe. Very excited to see and hear the future mind bending information you have to offer Dan. Remember, “there is no spoon”.

    • Dan Casey says:

Right? It certainly seems like that’s what they’re building towards. I’ll keep that in mind, but I’d much rather know kung fu.

  9. RedwoodCoast says:

I hope you are spot on with the speculation about the monster’s verse from Legendary.    Don’t blame PacRim1 delivery all on Guillermo del Toro.   They shot for the moon there and only succeeded with maybe dozen brought to movie IMAX moments, but those dozen showed the potential of the genre.  PS. shame on you for echoing that XENA ripoff Wonder Woman costume.   I oh so wanted a Justice League, not a hollywood execs knows better league.

    • Dan Casey says:

Oh, I don’t blame GDT for my dissatisfaction with Pacific Rim. I think I built it up too much for myself ahead of time.

Also, for the record, I’m a fan of Wonder Woman’s new look. We’ll get Justice League eventually. In the meantime, let’s just hope that BvS turns out to be surprisingly good.

  10. Will this be on the Nerdist YT Channel? Please say…yes!

  11. Jim says:

Maybe its me, but…are you standing at a slight angle? It kept distracting me, otherwise, fast, and full of musings. I like it.

    • Dan Casey says:

Ha — good eye. I was standing on a couple of planks that were kind of unwieldy. We’ll fix that for episode two. Thanks for watching!

  12. Jenn says:

Dan. You sure know how to talk fast and lull the viewer into a false sense of being your friend.  Nicely done.  Love the Stein.

  13. cardsfanbj says:

A great start to a promising series. One thing, though, it seemed a little choppy, like those crappy KFC commercials that look like they’re supposed to have been shot by real people and edited on their own computer in their basement (and not just a marketing ploy to get people to buy junk food), whereas the Nerdist empire is great at professionally done pieces, like the podcast or with Nerdist News. Dan Casey is awesome.

    • Dan Casey says:

Thanks for the feedback, cardsfanbj! I think they want to go for a more YouTube-y jump cut style of editing to see how it does, and to set it apart stylistically from Nerdist News.

  14. Groot I Am says:

    Great Dan work!

  15. Todd says:

Dan, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship. Great show.

  16. Brendon S. Peck says:

A film that pits Godzilla against King Kong could go south fast if the studio isn’t carful. I’m afraid the idea may be a bridge too far. Great work Dan.

    • Dan Casey says:

Thanks, Brendon. I think that they’ll take their time with it and get their money’s worth while monster movies are back in vogue. That being said, one of the best parts of Godzilla films was seeing him go toe-to-toe with other monsters.

  17. SerenityValley84 says:

I like it man. I would love to see Godzilla vs King Kong some day. And I’m seeing Guardians this friday, SO EXCITED!!!

  18. Bill says:

This bro seems like he would make fun of nerds. Probably not beat them up, but at least berate them.

    • Dan Casey says:

Bro, as much as I like pounding protein shakes and stuffing dweebazoids into lockers, you couldn’t be further from the truth.

  19. d4niel_p says:

Fun clip Dan, and you’re spot on on first Pac Rim. I also love Guillermo del Toro and that’s why the flick was even more disappointing for me.
P.S.: Web clips (the same problem is with Malik’s Play) are not in your RSS feed, please do something about it.

    • Dan Casey says:

Hi, d4niel! Glad you dug it. Here’s hoping Pac Rim 2 will be the film we both want.

I’ll notify our web devs about that issue. Thanks for letting me know!

  20. Kamilo says:

Do like ^_^ Keep up the good work Dan

  21. Rick says:

    Way to go daniel-san!
