The CW’s New LEGENDS OF TOMORROW Trailer Has DC Comics Characters Galore

The CW and Warner Brothers Television have officially dropped the first trailer for their latest DC Comics-inspired TV show, Legends of Tomorrow, and it looks pretty darn cool. (I also have to add that it was a mercifully brief trailer that didn’t give the entire pilot episode away like the Supergirl trailer that dropped yesterday.)

The new show, firmly set in the Arrow/The Flash universe and featuring many cast members of both shows, isn’t really based on any one team from the comics; rather, seems more like a smorgasbord of characters from all over the DC Comics universe. We’ve got Captain Cold (Wentworth Miller), Heat Wave (Dominic Purcell), and Firestorm — or at least his Martin Stein half (Victor Garber) — hailing from The Flash’s neck of the woods. From Arrow we’ve got the formerly dead Black Canary (Caity Lotz) — now dubbed the White Canary — and the Atom (Brandon Routh). Among the new additions are Hawkgirl (Ciarra Renee) and Rip Hunter (Arthur Darvill) from the Time Masters.

Maybe the coolest reveal from the trailer is the bad guy behind everything, Vandal Savage, an immortal villain who has lived thousands and thousands of years, plaguing everyone from the Justice Society of America in the 1940s to the present day Justice League to other DC super teams and beyond. He’s one of DC’s biggest biggest baddies, and has never had a live-action incarnation, so this is a long time coming. (He was nearly played by Jay Baruchel in George Miller’s ill-fated Justice League: Mortal, which Dan Casey breaks down on this week’s The Dan Cave.) In the trailer, we also finally see the Atom shrink, instead of just being TV’s Iron Man. (Firestorm still needs a new costume though.) The action looks pretty cool and, seeing how it’s not based on any one comic, we could potentially see any number of DC characters, from the famous to the obscure, making an appearance. As a lifelong DC fanboy, I’m pretty psyched about that prospect.

Legends of Tomorrow is set to debut mid-season in 2016 on the CW, and it’s going to be a loooong wait.
