If there’s one thing we’re more fascinated by in life than anything else, it’s cult stuff. That particular, fervent brand of aggressive belief has always captured the hearts and minds of popular cultureâas have the leaders who’ve perpetuated their “truth” to the believing masses. There’s something so nefarious and particularly evil about someone who claims to have The Answers and know The Way To Really Live Your Best Life. There’s an automatic unease that’s created in that sort of circular logic. Thank goodness, that the gang behind Hulu‘s The Path, a new series starring Hugh Dancy (Hannibal), Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad), and Michelle Monaghan (True Detective), has really dug its heels into the creep factor that we all love.
Using Fleet Foxes’ “White Winter Hymnal” as the backing trackâa song that plays out in the round (a.k.a. when three or more voices sing the same refrain, starting at different parts and in turn harmonizing, albeit eerily)âThe Path‘s trailer is unsettling even without showing us much more than glimpses of the moral and ethical seediness at play in Cal Roberts’ (Dancy) particular cult. The family-centric atmosphere he creates is no doubt the most subversive use of Jason Katims’ (creator of Friday Night Lights and Parenthood, among others) storytelling wheelhouse. Katims is an executive producer on the series, created by Jessica Goldberg, who also wrote on Parenthood. Needless to say, “keeping it in the family” is going to take on a different sort of meaning in this series. There’s probably a clear eyes, full hearts joke in here, too, but we’ll refrain. Because we have STANDARDS (or something).
