The Cosmos to Gift Us With a Carl Sagan Biopic from Warner Bros.

Warner Bros. Pictures has announced, through an exclusive release from Tracking Board, that they will are producing a biopic about the legendary Carl Sagan.

Sagan, whose accolades almost entirely involve the prefix astro-, was perhaps best known as the host and co-creator of the original Cosmos: A Personal Voyage, which aired for 13 episodes on PBS back in 1980. Sagan also wrote and released a book to accompany the series that delved deeper into its topics of science, civilization, and existence while maintaining the easily accessible and poetic tone of the show.

Beyond Cosmos, Sagan was a beloved science communicator who wrote numerous books, made dozens of TV appearances, and almost personally created an entire generation of science enthusiasts. Sagan died in 1996 at the age of 62.

Warner Bros. has also announced that Courtenay Valenti and Cate Adams will be producing the project for Warner Bros. Some may recognize Valenti’s name from the credits of this summer’s explosive masterpiece: Mad Max: Fury Road. Also jumping on board the Ship of the Imagination to produce will be Lynda Obst and Rachel Abarbanell from Lynda Obst Productions, which helped oversee production on Interstellar. Finally, Sagan’s widow Ann Druyan will also be producing, hopefully making sure that the project stays authentic. This will of course be very important for a project related to Sagan, whose skepticism and search for the truth was a staple in his character.

It is a surprise to see that friend and colleague Neal deGrasse Tyson is not involved with the project, as it was Sagan who tried to guide his career in astronomy and astrophysics. But Dr. Tyson did host an updated version of Cosmos just last year, so we’re holding out hope.

No word on a director, writer, or release date were included in the announcement, but our excitement is astronomical.
