The BRIGSBY BEAR Teaser Trailer is as Weird as You’d Expect a Kyle Mooney Movie to Be

Since joining Saturday Night Live in 2013, Kyle Mooney has established himself as “the weird one” with a sharp and dry sense of humor that everybody might not always get… which might be why it seems we haven’t seen as much of it during the past couple seasons. So it’s not surprising that the premise of his first feature film, which he wrote and stars in, seems a bit odd. So odd that it’s kind of tough to tell from the trailer what the movie’s actually about. (via Entertainment Weekly).

The video isn’t exactly dialogue-heavy, but we can glean from it that Mooney’s character has an obsession with what looks like a kids show character and an odd relationship with his parents. That much is true, since we do in fact know that this dramedy is about a man named James (Mooney) who was kidnapped as a baby and raised on a show called Brigsby Bear, which was made up by his captors. When he’s eventually rescued, he learns that he was the show’s only audience and sets out to finish its incomplete story on his own.

We get a couple peeks at Mark Hamill in the trailer, and while not seen here, Greg Kinnear, Matt Walsh, Michaela Watkins, Andy Samberg, and Claire Danes also round out the supporting cast. For the record, we saw the movie at Sundance and thought it was “an earnest salute to the weirdo in all of us.” So while this one’s for the outcasts, its appeal is more universal than it may seem.

Check out the trailer above, revisit our review of the film here, and let us know in the comments if you plan on checking this one out.
