Yes, these are funny. I just want to say, though, that the world is well-aware of David Lynch and all his attributes. Comparing an individual work to his style is the hypothetical David Lynch version of something Kafkaesque, you know? I understand the comparisons, but they seem unnecessary. If something’s absurdist, whatever, that should be enough for it to be enjoyed. Enough artists are in that same vein, like another common source of weak parallels, Beckett! You know, based upon a few works. It’s just after a while of Like A Velvet Glove Cast In Iron being my favorite comic (well, before I really dove into Clowes) and it being described back to me as “basically the graphic novel form of a David Lynch movie, like Eraserhead”, which I also enjoyed, I’m just annoyed. Clowes himself separated himself from that comparison, although he understood it. I know Women’s Musical Chairs isn’t anything new or prolific, but it doesn’t deserve (good or bad) an irrelevant name attached to it. It could just as well be like the work of the Gunn brothers, or Tim Burton, or Pedro Almodovar… except more or less funny or reduced, or heck, it’s Wes Anderson with less dialogue and more absolute death! It’s a fucking comedy sketch. It’s like Dave Ross getting hit by arrows, and not having a chair to die in. And, yeah, maybe there’s more to it. Maybe it reminds you of Louis CK’s early shorts. They were absurdist. Maybe all these names should be tagged.
Sorry. I’m just sick of the objectification of certain names. I like these posts a lot otherwise. And, I know, as a mere internet user, my opinion doesn’t matter. Thank you for the list.
