Terrified #20: Ty Segall

Joining Dave in the studio today is none other than Ty Segall!  He’s one of the most, if not THE most, prolific musicians of our time, and such a nice guy.  They talked “freaking out”, the power of the human mind to do something you don’t want it to do, and the anxiety that comes from living with disturbed parents.  Also, Ty and Dave high-fived.

Great episode. I have a lot of the same issues as you, Ty. My mom was borderline, not bipolar, but same heavy manipulation. Awful. I ended the relationship years ago, good for you Ty for respecting yourself and getting away and talking about it all.

I assume maybe you’re the same as me with the anxiety over having things concentrated on me. Feeling like things shouldn’t be focused on me, I shouldn’t get a lot of attention, I shouldn’t talk about myself, etc.

I’m still awful with it, but it helps knowing that it comes from my mom needing everything to be about her, not about me, and I was made to feel bad about anything being about me (even situations that were clearly about me) because she needed all of the attention on her. And knowing that helps me talk back to those feelings.

Your self awareness is great, and this episode was awesome. Thanks for doing this podcast with Dave, and Dave, you did a great job on this podcast!
