Terminator: Rebooted

You knew this day would come, it was inevitable; the question was when, and would we be prepared to face it? That’s right: The Terminator, one of the most beloved franchises in sci-fi/action movie history is getting the reboot treatment, and only Skynet knows what we have in store for us.

Paramount Pictures, in association with Annapurna Pictures and Skydance Productions will produce the first in what is promised to be a new trilogy of Terminator films; a trilogy with no association to Arnie’s romps as the time-traveling robotic bounty hunter with a heart of gold (or at the very least, molten lava). While no cast or crew has been revealed as of yet, the companies have announced a release date of June 26th, 2015.

We’re sure this is only the first of many Terminator news stories we’ll be bringing you in the two years until the film’s release, so stay tuned, stay vigilant, and never trust a machine… unless it speaks with a heavy Austrian accent.

Excited for these new Terminator films? Got a favorite moment from the originals? Leave a comment, email me, or say hi and howdy on ye olde Twitter Machine.

The sad fact about today is that it is easier to promote a movie that already has a “GEEK ” fan base ,and a recognizable name . I completely agree with CJ ,but an other sad fact is that most movie goers would believe that Deathlok is a copy of Terminator ,that is how ignorant people of today are . I have always loved Deathlok and would love to see a movie made of him .

  2. CJ says:

1st – MAN OF STEEL was the needed rebooting of Superman that Warner Bros / DC Comics needed theatrically (@ least Warner Bros waited 6 – 7 years) and YES it worked …

As for THE TERMINATOR ? Well, obviously Paramount Studios wants another Franchise (especially after they lost IRON MAN to the Walt Disney Studios) to go with TRANSFORMERS, G.I. JOE, STAR TREK …. or they wouldn’t have coughed up the money that MGM, FOX and Universal chose not to …

The problem with The Terminator (as a franchise) is the fact each release was tied to a different Studio, with a different MPAA rating, with different actors, with more of Stan Winston’s awesome practical special effects being replaced by CGI (& that just fucked up the continuity) –

The Terminator (1984) distributed by Orion Pictures (now MGM)

Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991) distributed by TriStar Pictures (now Sony) along with T2 3-D: Battle Across Time (1996, Universal Studios)

Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003) distributed by Warner Bros.(North America) and Columbia Pictures (International)

Terminator Salvation (2009) distributed by Warner Bros. (North America)
    and Columbia Pictures (International)

I can’t stand remakes / reboots! In order for me to believe in Terminator as a new franchise? I think Hollywood Studios need to wait until the end of this decade before trying to bring back are favorite 1/2 man 1/2 machine! The franchise had some actors you can’t replace – Arnold Schwarzenegger, Linda Hamilton, Michael Biehn, Lance Henriksen, Bill Paxton, Robert Patrick – and delivered it in graphic Rated R (or close to it)! About the ONLY benefit of one Studio distributing another trilogy is that fans can finally get a real Terminator multi-disc boxset that we’ll never ever get!

Instead of trying to reboot a franchise (when we need more time to forget 3 and 4, while still appreciating 1 and 2) …. why not purchase the rights to Marvel’s Deathlok the Demolisher from the Walt Disney Co and make it a mid budget R rated action horror flick blockbuster? (this character – like Blade – itsn’t meant to be watered down to a PG Rating!) ….

Did I just name-check on obscure character from the Marvel universe? Fuck yeah, I did! The 1st time I saw The Terminator back in 1984 (along with all the low budget Cyborg films that followed) @ the cinema … I turned to my friends and said “fuck Arnold’s character is just like Marvel’s Deathlok! (back then, I was surprised Marvel didn’t take take James Cameron n’ Co. to court for plagiarism (lol) ….

FACT – In the early 1990s, a Deathlok film was at the script stage, with screenwriter Randall Frakes. Then, in 2007, a Deathlok feature film was supposedly at the script stage at Paramount Pictures (with screenwriter David Self)!

    Who’s with me?

Terminator – not now, not for another 7 years!!

Deathlok the Demolisher! – Fuck Yeah! Do it!

    BOOOOOO to too many reboots.

It’s interesting, though, how nerds complain about reboots and sequels taking emphasis away from original properties and new adaptations, but then when we see it — such as with Man of Steel — suddenly it’s the Greatest Thing Ever!

  4. Shayde says:

    Think outside the box here.

Let’s say that the events of the first movies are valid. They did stop the future.

But now, we ambled forward with technology, and we created a different yet similar future further down the timeline.

  5. JetpackBlues says:

@Kristoffer: That wasn’t Chris. That was his fat, drunk brother Peter. 😛

Terminator is almost a 30 year old franchise. It should be terminated, fuckers.

Or they should have done better with the Sarah Connor Chronicles. That could have been spun off into another movie. Starting from scratch all over again is ridiculous.

  6. Kristoffer says:

The big question is though will Chris Hardwick reprise his role as 2nd Engineer in this new reboot?

  7. David D says:

Terminator in the franchise that absolutely will not stop until we are all dead.

Rise of the Machines and Salvation are garbage. Salvation was supposed to be the first film in a new trilogy, and then everyone realised it was terrible and that McG was a huge mistake.

Rebooting the franchise when the first one never actually reached a conclusion makes no sense, and having Arnie in a reboot makes no sense either. If he’d been dumped after Judgement Day, the franchise might have reached a natural conclusion after three or four films.

I’m really sick of Hollywood trying to force trilogies onto the general public. The Bourne Legacy was supposed to be the first of a trilogy and was awful. Dredd was going to be a trilogy until no-one watched it.

The only way to continue the Terminator franchise is to make the next film the last one. Set it in the last days of the man vs. machine war, have one side win, then reboot it in 2030 (weeks before the machines actually rise up against us in a perfect moment of pure publicity gold).

  8. Sergio says:

Ok, this is what SHOULD happen: the original trilogy stays, Terminator Salvation was a total inept waste. Get James Cameron to come out of his stupid Avatar obsession and direct a whole 2nd trilogy, this time detailing the story of the WAR against the machines. If possible, get Edward Furlong off his couch in his parent’s house and have him play John Conner, and give MICHAEL BIEHN a starring role as well!!!! Gosh, it’s like these idiot studios are on another planet!!!!

  9. Josh Zeller says:

I can already smell the franchise fatigue! wasn’t the last Terminator film a reboot of a proposed trillogy? Ugh!

  10. Dave says:

Boooo! I hope a Terminator comes back in time to stop the reboot!

  11. PJM says:

Didn’t they already say there was gonna be a new trilogy of Terminator films after that one with Throat Cancer Rises as John Connor? To be honest, I liked the direction that movie was going in; the execution was just sloppy, though.

In a way, I’m anxious and hopeful, and at the same time, I’m worried. Will the Terminator be purely a creation of the machines, or will they make it a prototype like in the third movie’s outtakes? For most franchises, a reboot is needed. For this one… I think we should wait and see.

For anyone complaining about reboots; if it wasn’t for the illegal downloading of movies before they’re even in theaters, studios wouldn’t be clinging to properties that have been proven to work.

  12. Eric Montoya says:

Complete and utter ridiculousness. With all of the wonderful science fiction out there waiting to be adapted, they choose to reboot….AGAIN.
